Teddy Roosevelt           1901-1909         Was placed as vice president to get out of the way, but                                                                              McKinley was assassinated. Progressive.

1898- Beginning of American Imperialism
Spanish American War - Fought with Spain over the freedom of Cubans to get Spain out of the Western Hemisphere. In the process of defeating Spin America gets Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, Philippines, and Hawaii.

Reason for entering World War I
1914 World war I.

  • Russia falls due to a civil war. 
  • Germany declares Unrestricted U-baot activity
  • Zimmerman note- a note from Germany to Mexico that asks it to join the war and promises to give it American land in return. 

This allows America to join the war on the side of the allies and fight for democracy.

1920s: Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover
18th Amendment: prohibits alcohol
19th Amendment: gives women the right to vote
Rise in art
Inventions: Radio, movies, automobiles
Harlem Renaissance: African American Art

1929: Stock Market Crash. Over Speculation. People were buying stocks on credit and when banks collapsed they called in their debts. These banks were independent rather than backed by the federal government. There was over production and not enough people to buy the stuff that was being made.
