Six Degrees of Separation (1607-1754)

1607 - Jamestown was founded. This small colony started out rocky, but managed to survive.

1608 - Quebec is founded. The placement of Quebec sets itself up to run into conflict with the English. The French wanted to connect Quebec with their other colony New Orleans which would cut off English's ability to expand. This is not okay with the English because they have to expand with their plantation and population growths. this leads to the French and Indian war.

1612- John rolfe introduces a new type of tobacco that is very successful in England. The tobacco requires a lot of land and labor, however. This leads to the beginning ideas of slavery and indentured servitude.

1619- First African American slaves were imported. This was a small shipment of only 20 slaves, but it paved the way and idea for large scale slavery import. It wasn't until years later, after the Bacon rebellion, that North America began to truly look into slavery as a possible labor source. This was an alternative option to the otherwise disposable native americans as a labor force.

1637- The Pequot War. This virtually exterminated the Pequot tribe and allowed for western expansion. The Western expansion would lead to conflict with the French over the Ohio area.

1675 - King Philip's War. This war made the natives realise that they needed to band together to fight the Europeans. Both sides went way farther than any previous war in torture and brutality. It completely decimated any hope of peaceful negotiations. The other tribes that survived (the Iroquois) sided with the French instead of the English.

1676- Bacon's Rebellion - Originally the colonists used white indentured servants that would work for them for about seven years in return for payment for their passage from the old world to the new world. There was a catch, however, they were required to be given a parcel of land at the end of their servitude. This was all fine and dandy for the first wave of white indentured, but as more and more white indentured servants became free and wanting of land, and as the good land was getting gobbled up, people became increasingly unsettled. This led to Bacon's Rebellion. Bacon kills a whole bunch of peaceful Indians causing further tension between the native americans and whites.
