Chapter 3 Questions

1)   What is the difference between the Puritans and the Separatists?

Puritans wanted to purify and remove catholic aspects from the Church of England, but Separatists believed that there was no hope for the church so they wanted to separate completely from the church.

2) What did King James dislike the two groups?

King James was worried that if the groups could go against him as a religious leader then they could also fight against his political power.

3) What is the importance of the Mayflower Compact?

 The Mayflower was way off course and therefore was able to create self government such as the Mayflower compact.

4) What advantages did the Massachusetts Bay Colony have on its arrival in the New World?

They had solid financial support, families and women traveled allowing for population growth, larger amount of skilled people.

5) What type of government was established in Massachusetts Bay?

Democracy.

6) Why was Anne Hutchinson removed from Massachusetts?  Roger Williams?

Both Anne Hutchinson and Roger Williams were Religious rebels. Roger Williams was a religious extremist. priest that started questioning everyone. He believed that everyone should take communion. Political system should have nothing to do with the church. Questioned the puritans taking up Native land. He goes and finds the colony of Rhode Island.

7) Why was Rhode Island established?  Why was it unique?

Rhode Island was established for complete religious freedom. It was the only colony that did not have persecution against any religion.

8) What were the fundamental orders of Connecticut?

Created by Thomas Hooker. It called for an assembly of elected representatives from Connecticut to make laws.

9) How were relations between New England settlers and the Native Americans?

The relationship, such as in the Plymouth colony, was amiable in the beginning of their arrival, but as colonists pressed further inland the Natives grew disgruntled. This led to the King Philip’s War.

10) What was the significance of King Phillip's War?

King Phillip’s war is an alliance by the tribes of New England to push back the colonists. It is the bloodiest war per capita in US History. The Natives fail, and the colonists exterminate said Natives. Afterwards there is no Native threat in New England.


11) What was the New England Confederation?

It was a military alliance between the Northern colonies formed in 1643.

12) Why did the Dutch settle in New Amsterdam?

The Dutch settled in New Amsterdam because of the rich sea-port. It was a commercial advance.

13) How did the English come to rule New York?

   The grant the Charles II gave to his brother included the already formed, New Amsterdam (made by the Dutch). This eventually dot turned into New York. It is important because it is very racially and religiously diverse (due to it being a sea port).

14) Why did Penn establish Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania was given to Penn by the King. It was a religious tolerated colony. It was specifically made for Quakers who were persecuted back in Europe.

15) What were the similarities among the Middle Colonies?  Differences?


The middle colonies had the main cash crop of Tobacco (such As Virginia). Religion was different in these colonies such as quakers (pennsylvania) Puritans and Anglicans.
