Unit Objectives

Work, Exchange, and Technology: How did technological and corporate innovations help to vastly increase industrial production?  What was the impact of these innovations on the lives of working people?
The railroad helped increase industrial production because it speedily delivered raw products to the factories to be created into products and then whisked the new product to consumers. The railroad developed new towns and often led to the demise of the others. Working people were forced to pay a high price for travel, but big businesses and politicians were often getting discounts due to corruption.

Politics and Power: How did the political culture of the Gilded Age reflect the emergence of new corporate power?  How successful were the challenges to this power?  Why did challenges to this power fail?

Environment and Geography: In what ways, and to what extent, was the West “opened” for further settlement through connection to eastern political, financial, and transportation systems?

The railroad opened up the opportunity of development in the west by transferring materials and settlers. People could not previously access that far without having to endure long grueling trails, but now the upper class could enjoy a leisure train ride to the western country.
